Reverend Johnson is a native of New Orleans, Louisiana and a product of the city’s     public school system from which he graduated in 1973. He received his Bachelor’s Degree in Biology from Dillard University of New Orleans in 1978. Upon graduating he was accepted and entered the Navy’s Aviation Officers’ Candidate School in Pensacola, Florida and was commissioned as an Ensign in December 1978.

In 1991 Commander Johnson attended and graduated from the Naval War College’s Command and Staff College receiving a Mas-ters of Arts Degree. In addition, he also received a Master’s of Science Degree from Salve Regina College of Newport, Rhode Island. He is also a graduate of the Armed Forces Staff College located in Norfolk, Virginia. He went on to assignments that lead him from 1996-2000 to Executive Officer of the Atlanta Region Navy Reserve Officer Training Corps (NROTC) consisting of the Georgia Institute of Technology (GA Tech) and Morehouse College units.  Operations Branch.

Reverend Johnson is an Ordained Elder with the Sixth Episcopal District of the A.M.E. Church located in Atlanta Georgia.  He was ordained an Elder in the spring of 2001.  He served as the Pastor of the New Mount Carmel A.M.E. Church located in Sharpsburg, Georgia for three years before being appointed Pastor of Flat Rock A.M.E. Church in July 2003.  He has led Flat Rock A.M.E. Church to grow from 40 members in 2003 to more than 125 members.  He is also the immediate past President of the Fayette County, Georgia Branch of the N.A.A.C.P.

He was elected in 2008 as the first Black City Councilman in Fayetteville, Georgia.  He was recently appointed as the Deputy Mayor of the Council. He maintains an excellent working relationship with the City and County governments of Fayetteville and Fayette County.  He has brought to the position organization, structure and consciousness to the community.

He is married to Dr. Vanessa Hall Johnson of New Orleans, Louisiana, who is also a retired United States. Naval Officer and retired Principal of Liberty Point Elementary School located in Union City Georgia.  He is the proud father of two sons, Devan and Edwin and his wife Joy and a proud grandfather of three beautiful girls, Erin Janelle, Jamie Ciara and Cayla Janae.

He loves his church and is a true Shepherd to the flock at Flat Rock AME Church. His theme for the church is “Teaching, Reaching and Transforming” his church as well as the community.

Rev. Arthurine Bishop

Rev. Arthurine Bishop was born and raised in Washington, DC.  She went on to receive her Bachelor of Arts Degree from the University of Maryland-Eastern Shore and became a Social Worker.  Rev. Bishop’s primary vocation for 34 years was as a Child Abuse and Family Service Social Worker for the State of Maryland.  She retired in 2003.

She presently serves as Assistant Pastor and is the Minisiterial Liaison for Missionary Society, Women’s Ministry, Baptism Ministry and Grief Ministry.  She also conducts the Mid-day Bible Study on Wednesday and is the Spiritual Liaison to the Women’s Ministry and Missionary.

Sis. Carrietta Butts

Trained as a youth in social behavior and etiquette, she shares her knowledge with young people. She is a trained and certified as a Global Career Development Facilitator.  As an Administer, she managed a small firm in Kansas City and went on to manage the Career Resource Center at Georgia State University for 12 years and assisted students with career choices and preparation and job fairs. She now works in the community assisting transitional adults and student with job preparation, resume writing and career management.

Married for 40 years to Dwight Butts and have 3 children, Damien, Alexia & Tiffany, 2 Grandchildren, Isaac & Naomi. She is a chef, a seamstress, a florist, and an event planner.  She says that God still has a plan for her; so she is not through with her work.

Carrietta accepted Christ at age 12 and has faithfully devoted herself to the building of God’s Kingdom. She started out in her youth as an usher, assisted her mother with the acolytes, and sang in the choir as a rebellious YPD’er, an advocate for change and inclusion in the AME church.  As an adult she continued to use her gifts to God’s glory in the choir and directed the children’s choir.  She headed the landscaping committee for the new sanctuary at Bethel Bloomfield.

Carrietta presently assists Pastor Johnson and the church as Administrative Coordinator, as well as helps to oversee the financial health of the organization.

Dr. Vanessa O. Hall Johnson

Dr. Johnson a native of New Orleans, Louisiana, graduated from L. B. Landry High School.  She earned a Bachelor of Arts degree in Elementary Education and Special Education and graduated Cum Laude from Dillard University, New Orleans.  She attended postgraduate school at San Diego State University, where she earned a Master’s in Educational Administration and acquired a subspecialty in Education and Training Management in 1987 in the Navy.  Following Postgraduate School in 1987, she was assigned as Assistant Director, Technical Training, Recruit Training Command in San Diego and subsequently as the Director, Standards and Evaluations. She served as the Senior Naval Science Instructor of the Frederick Douglass High School, Naval Junior Reserve Officers Training Corps (NJROTC) Unit. Dr. Johnson retired from the Navy as a Commander.  In addition, she earned a Doctorate in Education from Clark Atlanta University in December 1999 and started her own company, “VanEdge” developing workshops and educational presentations for parents and students, pre-school through college.  She served as the Assistant Principal of Crabapple Middle School in Roswell, Georgia, Parklane Elementary School in East Point, Georgia and served as the Principal of Liberty Point Elementary School in Union City, Georgia.

Dr. Johnson established the very successful E.S.T.E.A.M. (self Esteem, Science, Technology Engineering, Art, and Mathematics) Summer Camp program for middle school girls along with a community food program for children ages 5-18 in June 2015.  The E.S.T.E.A.M. After School program will be held at Bennett’s Mill Middle School and will service boys and girls grades 6, 7 and 8th grades.

Dr. Johnson is married to Reverend Edward J. Johnson, Jr., of New Orleans, Louisiana, who is the pastor of Flat Rock A.M.E. Church, Fayetteville, Georgia. They have two sons, Edwin (wife Joy) and Devan and three beautiful granddaughters.

Rev. Millicent White Thomson

Rev. Millicent J. Thomson is an ordained itenerant deacon at Flat Rock AME Church. She is serving Flat Rock as the Christian Education Director, New Members Class teacher, and Homeless Outreach Minister. She has been a member of Flat Rock for eight years. She is a third year M.Div/MAPT student at Columbia Theological Seminary in Decatur, Ga.

Rev. Millicent J. Thomson is a second year M.Div/MAPT student originally from El Sobrante, California. She is the daughter of Mildred and Richard White. She is an ordained minister in the African Methodist Episcopal Church and serves at Flat Rock AME Church in Fayetteville,  Georgia. She is married to Minister Anthony Thomson, Sr. and has an older sister, three children, one new granddaughter, and a dog.

Rev. Millicent works with the Homeless Outreach Ministry, Director of Christian Education and New Members Program.
