Reverend Edward J. Johnson, Jr. 

Reverend Johnson is a native of New Orleans, Louisiana and a product of the city’s public school system from which he graduated in 1973. He received his Bachelor’s Degree in Biology from Dillard University of New Orleans in 1978. Upon graduating he was accepted and entered the Navy’s Aviation Officers’ Candidate School in Pensacola, Florida and was commissioned as an Ensign in December 1978.

Newport, Rhode Island. As a continuous learner, he also obtained a graduate degree from the Armed Forces Staff College located in Norfolk, Virginia. His diligence in his field lead to future assignments during 1996 through 2000 which positioned himself as the Executive Officer of the Atlanta Region Navy Reserve Officer Training Corps (NROTC) consisting of the Georgia Institute of Technology (GA Tech) and Morehouse College units. Reverend Johnson is an Ordained Elder with the Sixth Episcopal District of the A.M.E. Church located in Atlanta Georgia. He was ordained an Elder in the Spring of 2001. He served as the Pastor of the New Mount Carmel A.M.E. Church located in Sharpsburg, Georgia for three years before being appointed Pastor of Flat Rock A.M.E. Church in July 2003. He has led Flat Rock A.M.E. Church to grow from 40 members in 2003 to more than 125 members. He is also the immediate past President of the Fayette County, Georgia Branch of the N.A.A.C.P.

In 2008, Rev. Johnson was appointed as the first Black City Councilman in Fayetteville, Georgia. He was recently selected as the Deputy Mayor of the Council. He maintains an excellent working relationship with the City and County governments of Fayetteville and Fayette County. He has brought to the position organization, structure and consciousness to the community.
He is married to Dr. Vanessa Hall Johnson of New Orleans, Louisiana, who is also a retired United States Naval Officer and retired Principal of Liberty Point Elementary School located in Union City Georgia. He is the proud father Devan and Edwin (and Edwin's wife Joy), and a proud grandfather of three beautiful girls, Erin Janelle, Jamie Ciara and Cayla Janae.

He loves his church and is a true Shepherd to the flock at Flat Rock AME Church. His theme for the church is “Teaching, Reaching and Transforming” a theme that extends from his church and into the community.
